What is cellulite?
Have you heard some of the other names for cellulite? Cottage cheese skin. Orange peel skin. The mattress phenomenon. We’ve even heard some refer to it as hail damage to the skin.
Cellulite is basically the formation of bumps and dimples in the skin and it happens when fat deposits drive through the connective tissue under the skin.
Although it can affect both men and women, the latter experience cellulite most often because of the how muscle, fat, and tissue are distributed differently. Normally, tissue and fat cells are arranged vertically in a woman’s body, so if the fat calls come into the layer of the skin it gives the appearance of cellulite. Men have less cellulite because their tissue has more of a criss-cross structure.
What causes cellulite?
Apart from the fact that cellulite results from fat cells pushing through connective tissue, not much is known about the underlying reasons for cellulite. Still, there are some factors that are known to contribute to having cellulite:
Specific genes are required for the development of cellulite. Whether you develop cellulite may depend on your metabolism and the distribution of your cells.
Among the lifestyle factors that may contribute to having cellulite are:
- Consuming too much fat and salt
- Not getting enough exercise
- Sitting for long periods each day
- Wearing clothes with tight elastic
It’s a common misconception that skinny people never have cellulite. And while it’s true that people with excess fat have more fat cells that can push through the skin, thereby causing cellulite, slim people aren’t immune to cellulite.
